Haha! Slowly catching up on reading, so a bit late to this one. But love it! “Glass everywhere, hundreds of dollars worth of ornaments in pieces—my long winter’s nap come to a premature, earsplitting end. I’ve never recovered.” Oh my! Fuck Christmas indeed.

I, too, love Eleanor’s writing.

Thanks for a wonderful, perfectly sized list.

My poor darling, I'm sorry you had such a fiasco with Christmas then. I wish this year, sans tree but with plenty of cheer, I hope, you and your husband are enjoying great festivities and laughing lots. :-*

Love your short list Troy. My favourite part was the description of Santa, the best I’ve seen! I look forward to checking out Eleanor’s writing, thanks for the suggestion.

Sending you and your husband wonderful, festive vibes as you head into the new year. Tell him I love his sneak baptism approach, I wonder what would have happened if it worked🤣, like how would you know?

Damn that heavy-broken tree!

This was really fun, Troy! I burst into laughter multiple times. Below are some of the lines that made me laugh-out-loud or ‘lol’ as the kids say:

“... despite a sneak attack in the bathtub by my lapsed Catholic husband trying to pull a fast one just to be safe.”

“... definitely no peace or goodwill toward men.”

“Loves animals, great work schedule (one night a year.) A competent cuddler, one assumes—Mrs. Claus seems well pleased, anyway. He lives life to the fullest, caring little for superficial things like waistlines, varied wardrobes, or a clean shave.”

Why are so many Christmas decorations absolutely nightmare inducing..?! It’s like ‘they’ want you to go through the motions, but they don’t want you getting too comfortable!

You described the discovery diaries so perfectly, that’s exactly what they felt like. I’m going to start from 001 in the new year.

Merry merry from us both to you and yours, my dear. Thanks so much for everything this year 💜💛💗🎄✨

The most comprehensive little diversion, the only one needed really, thank you Troy! I won't wear Xmas jumpers but I'm strangely attached to a Grinch pyjama set, and a modest recyclable Xmas tree is only worth it for kittens to climb up and attack.

Joyeux Noel Espagnol, Troy, what a joy it has been to discover you!💛🐝💛

Love the story of all these delightful ornaments but how sad! 🥺

And the Grinch! His heart grows 💗 what could be better? Eleanor’s writing is incredible. Always enjoy your recs and thoughts, Troy.

Have a merry Spanish no-tree-Christmas!

Laughing out loud over here. This is the best reason for the season list I’ve read. And I’m so glad Cindy Lou Who and Eleanor made it on that list. I hope they can meet someday. We stopped doing Christmas trees too—our home is literally bordered on two sides by a defunct Xmas tree farm. The elderly brothers who still come up to maintain the trees (because what else does one do when you’re pushing 90) offer a few trees here and there to family/friends so we thought it charming our first year...only to quickly realize that every tree cut is one less growing big and strong. We felt dirty and decided never again. 😂

I have a complete, vivid picture of you asleep in a tiny bedroom with a glass menagerie of pointy and sharp Christmas cheer crashing down on top of you. That might be enough to turn anyone off Christmas forever. That aside, wishing you a peaceful and joyous end to the year. It's been such a pleasure getting to know you and your work. Here's to an incredible 2024!

Our cat knocked our tree down one year. My sister told my mom it was me that did it and my dad walloped me with a belt....yeah...fuck christmas!
